New Website On Implementing Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management in Europe

Oct. 8, 2012 — Criteria and indicators have emerged as a powerful tool in promoting sustainable forest management. Since Rio 1992, several international processes and initiatives have developed criteria and indicators as a policy instrument to evaluate and report progress towards sustainable forest management.

The FOREST EUROPE process has developed a pan‐European set. By now, this set has served as the basis for State of Europe's Forests assessments in 2003, 2007 and 2011, and provided the basis for regional and national policy formulation, analysis and monitoring.

The newly launched website on implementing criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management in Europe gathers together information from a recent project which analyses the implementation of those criteria and indicators in the 46 signatory states of the FOREST EUROPE process. The project also aims to strengthen the process and the use of criteria and indicators, not only as a tool for monitoring and reporting, but also for policy making at national and European level.

The project is coordinated and conducted by the European Forest Institute (EFI), in close cooperation with FOREST EUROPE Liaison Unit, UNECE/FAO, Finnish Forest Research Institute and relevant experts.
