FAA Stalls Amazon's Plans By Restricting Commercial Drones

FAA Stalls Amazon's Plans By Restricting Commercial Drones

TheStreet (June 25, 2014) — Amazon's hopes of launching "Prime Air" were put on hold this week by the Federal Aviation Administration. On Monday, the FAA published a document addressing the operation of model airplanes. Buried within the document were regulations that apply to drones, prohibiting their operation. "Any operation not conducted strictly for hobby or recreation purposes could not be operated under the special rule for model aircraft. Clearly, commercial operations would not be hobby or recreation flights. Likewise, flights that are in furtherance of a business, or incidental to a person's business, would not be a hobby or recreation flight" the document stated. In the fall 2013, the FAA said it would aim to come up with a plan to safely integrate drones into airspace by September of 2015 but will likely push that deadline back. For now, Amazon will have to stick with Snail Mail. Video provided by TheStreet
