Facebook's Psychological Study Outrages Users, UK Regulators To Probe

TheStreet (July 2, 2014) — Facebook reportedly manipulated the timeline feeds of nearly 700,000 users in 2012 to study how different emotional expressions change users' behavior. Facebook and its research partners concluded that if a user sees a lot of negative feeds, this user is more likely to post a negative status update. The psychological experiment was carried out without users' consent. UK data regulators are investigating whether Facebook violated data protection laws. Dr. Suzy Moat, Assistant Professor at the University of Warwick Business School joins Julia Sun to discuss the experiment. Video provided by TheStreet

Facebook May Be Banned in China, But Ad Sales Are Alive

TheStreet (May 13, 2014) — Facebook may be banned in China, but that hasn't slowed the social media giant from quietly building its advertising business there. Bloomberg reports that Facebook is looking to lease office space in China, presumably to open an office there. However, the company has already been working with exports on advertising. Facebook has essentially become more of an advertising company than a social media company since the social network went public, and companies have learned that a Facebook page is no good without spending some ad dollars since Facebook cut back on organic reach. Why Google-Owned YouTube Wants to Buy Gaming Video Site Twitch

TheStreet (May 19, 2014) — Google-owned YouTube is reportedly in talks to buy Twitch for as much as $1 billion, nearly as much as the $1.65 billion deal for YouTube itself in 2006. Here's why the largest internet name in the world would want a relatively obscure startup. First, Twitch is the leading online platform for gamers to stream and broadcast videogame play. The site boasts 45 million unique monthly users, one million of those who actively create and upload their own content. Second, Twitch is the fourth-largest source of broadband traffic in primetime hours, even beating out Facebook and Hulu. Finally, Twitch users' levels of engagement are higher than those who use YouTube. Video provided by TheStreet
