Astronomers working for the European Space Agency have witnessed a black hole awakening to feed on a large planet or a brown dwarf. Scientists assure that a similar process will soon occur in the center of our galaxy where there is also a black hole.

E-ELT: Looking Into Black Holes

Deutsche Welle (July 21, 2013) — Known as the E-ELT for short, the European Extremely Large Telescope will be located at the European Southern Observatory, the ESO. At the moment, parts of the spyglass are being assembled in Garching in southern Germany. Jochen Liske of the ESO is involved in the project, which is expected to be ready to operate in the coming decade. Yet astronomers already know the telescope will be used to research black holes. At the moment, an enormous gas cloud is being torn apart by a black hole in the galaxy where the earth is located, the Milky Way. The E-ELT will be used to probe events like this, with the aim of answering key astronomical questions, such as the role of black holes in the development of galaxies.

The Milky Way is theoretically centered by a massive black hole and the BlackHoleCam is going to try and get the first image of it's event horizon, the point of no return. NASA (Feb. 15, 2013) — It may have been small, appearing so even in the best optical telescopes on Earth, but the flyby of asteroid 2012 DA14 was anything but a minor event to astronomers. Never feared as a threat to anyone or anything on or around our planet, DA14, about the size of half a football field, did come within 17-thousand miles of Earth, about 5-thousand miles close than many of our satellites in geosynchronous orbit. And that gave astronomers and scientists something to see and learn about, relatively up close.
