A German company has developed a system for recycling shrimp shells and other fish waste to create oils for the food production industry. The oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help prevent cardiovascular problems. The aim is to minimize waste from the fish-processing industry. Other potential leftovers are turned into a powder that is high in protein and may have anti-inflammatory properties.

Thailand Climate Protection Through Energy Efficiency

Deutsche Welle (Mar. 13, 2012) — Thailand needs ever more energy for its industry. It already imports up to 10 percent of its electricity. The growth of industry is bringing a sharp rise in greenhouse gas emissions. Now a German-Thai project funded by the International Climate Protection Initiative is working for a more efficient use of energy, thereby contributing to climate protection.The Thai government has a long-term goal of "Low-Carbon Industry". It is collaborating with Germany in the umbrella organization "Energy Efficiency for Small and Medium Enterprises" on several pilot energy-efficiency projects in small and mid-sized companies. The Environment Ministry holds consultations regularly. The aim is to cooperate with German experts and develop an "Energy Use and Climate Protection Plan" for Thailand's economy.

Climate: Peruvian Farmers Battle Climate Change

Deutsche Welle (Dec. 17, 2012) — Peru's northern coastline is increasingly being battered by storms and other extreme weather linked to climate change. Now together with a local financial establishment, the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) has set up an insurance system that helps compensate farmers in the case of damage.Valentin Ruiz, the chairman of the Cooperative of Banana Producers in the region, is worried by the effects that storms and flooding have on the banana crop. To protect banana producers from the effects of El Nio, he and his members have collected money for dams and levees.
