Manned Mission to Mars? Hedgehogs May Go First

Reuters (Feb. 27, 2013) — American entrepreneur, Dennis Tito, says he wants to launch a manned mission to Mars in January 2018, but researchers at NASA and Stanford University argue that it may be better to visit the mysterious Martian moon, Phobos first. They're developing a team of robots they call "hedgehogs" to explore Phobos in the belief that a trip to the Martian moon will make a subsequent mission to Mars safer and more productive.

Boeing Completes Pilot-in-the-Loop Milestone

NASA (Mar. 5, 2014) — Former astronaut Chris Ferguson of The Boeing Company demonstrated that the CST-100 spacecraft simulator and software allows a human pilot to take over control of the spacecraft from the computer during various phases of a mission following separation from the launch vehicle. The pilot-in-the-loop demonstration at the Houston Product Support Center on Jan. 16, 2014 was a milestone under Boeing's Commercial Crew Integrated Capability agreement with the agency and its Commercial Crew Program.
