Google to Spend Billions on Satellites, Spreading Internet Access

TheStreet (June 2, 2014) — Google plans to spend more than $1 billion on a fleet of satellites in another step toward its mission of spreading Internet access to unconnected regions of the world. That's according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, which says that the search giant plans to begin with 180 small, high-capacity satellites and could eventually expand to a project that tops $3 billion. According to the report, Google has a satellite team of 10 to 20 people dedicated to the mission, led by O3b Networks founder Greg Wyler. FCC Set to Take Up Net Neutrality and What Consumers Will Pay

TheStreet (May 14, 2014) — The Federal Communications Commission is set to begin hearings on the issue of 'Net Neutrality' on Thursday. At issue is whether broadband providers can charge big entertainment companies more to stream their content at faster speeds. TheStreet's Media expert and Deputy Managing Editor Leon Lazaroff explains that while large entertainment companies, like 21st Century Fox and Walt Disney will be able to afford higher broadband rates, those who could get hurt are smaller startups who may not be able to afford the higher prices for faster broadband speeds. Lazaroff says one of the big questions is how much the FCC will consider broadband delivery more of a utility. Video provided by TheStreet
