Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland.

There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism.
